Intoart Residencies

Intoart’s programme for Explorers works with four Intoart artists that are yet to have a solo presentation of their work in the public domain to set their own long-term creative goals: Nancy Clayton, Lisa Contucci, Uduehi Imienwanrin and Lisa Trim. The activity will construct robust steps towards these goals through the production of substantial new bodies of work.

By supporting artists to develop personal research interests and material expertise through comprehensive studio–based education and facilitation, artists will gain the opportunity to work in and beyond the studio, to design, develop and realise their own artistic programmes.

The barriers to equality of opportunity for artists with learning disabilities are entrenched and considerable. Production-led outcomes will bring a solid legacy for the artists and inspire confidence and positive change in the sector.

Career progression for visual artists is occasionally meteoric, but when the platform of a graduating show from a major academic institution is unavailable, artists must prove themselves through the sustained, ambitious production of artwork, made visible through incremental steps such as group shows, events, performances, publications, solo shows in artist-led project spaces, etc towards potential long-term goals, such as a major solo exhibition in a public institution.

Intoart has a track record of this approach with Intoart artists Mawuena Kattah, Clifton Wright and Ntiense Eno-Amooquaye whose work has been shown nationally; on international platforms; and acquired by National Art Collections.

Investing in artists with learning disabilities to develop work on such an ambitious scale places them in a strong position to bring about long-term change and impact on the diversity of artists that are included in contemporary art and design programming on a local, regional, national and international platform.
